More than half of New Zealand tuned in to watch Sky’s extensive coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, with over 2.8 million people watching on Sky’s Olympic channels.

A total of 2,819,200 people – 57% of New Zealand’s population – watched the Olympic Games throughout New Zealand, including free-to-air on Sky Open, at an average of 1.4 million viewers per day[1].

Sky’s digital platforms, Sky Sport Now and Sky Go, also experienced significant volumes of activity during the Games as more than 350,000 unique viewers flocked to both platforms to stream Sky’s Olympics coverage almost 21 million times, averaging 1.3 million daily streams[2].

Athletics, rowing, swimming, canoe sprinting, artistic gymnastics, and golf led the way as the top rating sports during the Olympics, while events that Kiwi athletes found success in proved to be the most watched across Sky’s coverage.

These events included Hayden Wilde’s silver medal in the men’s triathlon, Lydia Ko’s gold medal-winning final round in the women’s golf, the women’s pole vault qualifiers which saw three New Zealanders progress to the final, and rowing and canoe sprint finals that resulted in medals for Lisa Carrington, Alicia Hoskin, Emma Twigg, Lucy Spoors, and Brooke Francis.

Additionally, Sky’s social channels achieved strong engagement across YouTube, X, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram throughout the Games.

More than 1200 posts – at an average of over 42 daily posts – showcasing medal-winning performances, exclusive interviews and other highlights of the Games led to 44.8 million impressions, 32.7 million video views, 2.9 million engagements, and an audience growth of 35,000[3].

Jonny Errington, Sky’s Chief Content and Commercial Officer, says: “We are incredibly proud of the coverage we’ve delivered to Kiwi audiences throughout the 2024 Olympic Games, and it’s wonderful to see so many New Zealanders rally behind our athletes as they represented us on the world stage. Few events captivate the world like the Olympics, and these figures underline both the magnitude of this year’s Games and the unprecedented success of our Kiwi athletes.”

“Over 17 days, Sky’s team on the ground delivered 82 live crosses and an impressive 170 pre-recorded previews and recaps, but what truly stood out were the raw, exclusive interviews with our athletes – these moments of triumph and heartbreak resonated deeply with audiences.”

Across Sky’s 12 Olympic channels, it averaged over 135 hours of live coverage every day, and over 14 hours of coverage on Sky Open per day.
